Who are we?

Road cycling retreats specialists offering unique and beautiful experiences on the fine national park roads of Dartmoor and Exmoor, in the beautiful county of Devon.

"Moor Retreats was born out of a single moment, but is the culmination of many years of experience. It was a crisp autumn day, windless. Cold, but not uncomfortable. One of those days when your skin tingles with a light blush at the end of a ride. The sun is low, orangey, and the moorland heather is transitioning from purple to a vibrant burnt sienna creating a saturated patchwork right to the horizon. Borderline goosebumps. A view that makes you feel simultaneously proud and fortunate that this is where you live. But it's an experience that needs sharing and I'm out here alone in this unique landscape. A few weeks previously I was sharing Sa Calobra in Majorca with hundreds of other cyclists. It's iconic, I get it. You see the photos, you see Team Sky training there and it's a box that many need to tick. This is different, in a good way. I'm in the heart of Dartmoor and my sensing are buzzing. But what I love the most is knowing that this moment is unique because no two days on Dartmoor or Exmoor are ever the same. The season, the weather, the animals - it's all in constant flux. It's dynamic, and I'm smiling most because I know tomorrow will be completely different. And that was where Moor Retreats began. A desire to share the road on moments like this and show fellow cyclists a truly unique experience". Ross Lovell, Lead Guide and Founder.

We are the fusion of two critical things. Firstly a love of all things endurance related - road cycling, sportives, triathlon, mountain biking, marathon running, ultras. Hell, we once even spent 24 hours in a kayak. We thrive on having that next challenge on the horizon, building up our performance and the unbridled buzz of reaching our goals. Secondly, it's our immense enthusiasm for the roads we're lucky enough to call our 'backyard'. We've travelled and raced all over the world, and it is by no means an exaggeration to say that this landscape is up there with the very best. We know the shortcuts, the 'scenic' routes, the best views, the hidden gems and, of course, the finest hills.

Retreats are led by Ross. Born in Devon, he will happily wax lyrical to anyone who will listen about what makes his home county so great for cycling. He is a certified British Cycling coach who has Everested both the iconic Haytor (twice a summit finish in the Tour of Britain) and the notoriously punchy Dartmeet, ridden a Coast-2-Coast-2-Coast and even a 330mile nonstop lap of the Devon borders. Elsewhere in the world he has raced the Absa Cape Epic in South Africa and 1000km Transportugal mountain bike races, ridden the 330km Tour du Mont Blanc three times, is a double finisher of the infamous Norseman triathlon, has 20 marathons and ultras under his belt and spent 6 months bikepacking around Europe, amongst other things. He has worked with brands like Skoda, Mitsubishi, Trek and Continental on big European rides as well, so definitely take the chance to tap into his knowledge of some of those infamous words in cycling - Galibier, Sa Calobra, Alpe d'Huez, Stelvio, Grossglockner, Izoard, Bonette...
